Fanshawe College recently hosted a chess tournament during Fuel Game Night in Forwell Hall, and it turned out to be a relaxing
and enjoyable evening for everyone involved. Unlike louder, fast-paced games, the chess event had a calm and focused vibe that many students appreciated. It gave them a chance to slow down, think through their moves, and just enjoy the game. One student said it was a chill event that anyone could enjoy whether they were playing to win or just having fun. For some, it even brought back old memories and sparked a renewed interest in chess. “I think this reignited my love for the game,” said one student, who’s already looking forward to the next tournament.
The event wasn’t just fun for players, but also for the staff helping out. One team member said they enjoyed working at the chess tables because it was peaceful and had a better atmosphere than more competitive events. Throughout the night, students played friendly matches, shared laughs, and a few even took home small prizes. But for most people, the best part wasn’t winning it was connecting with others and enjoying the moment.
The tournament showed that you don’t always need noise and big crowds to have a great time. Sometimes, all it takes is a board, some pieces, and a good opponent. Whether students were longtime chess lovers or just trying it out for the first time, everyone was welcome. It was a simple, fun night that reminded people how games can bring us together in a meaningful way. Many students left feeling happy, relaxed, and already looking forward to the next time.
