Marineland, the once beloved Niagara Falls sea animal tourist attraction, is under scrutiny from Ontario Premier Doug Ford for its remaining whales in captivity.
“They have a responsibility to take care of these whales,” said Ford when asked about Marineland at an unrelated press conference.
“They need to make sure that they’re healthy.”
Since the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins act (Bill S-203) in 2019, 20 belugas have died under Marineland’s care.
Despite the attraction’s closure in 2024, 30 belugas remain as the last whales in captivity in Canada.
Ford says his heart breaks for the “poor whales” held in captivity, adding that “it’s just terrible over there.”
He adds that he believes Marineland is running low on money as it costs $1 million to keep the whales fed every month.
Marineland has requested export permits from the federal government to move all of its belugas out of the country, said Fisheries and Oceans Canada to The Canadian Press.
They say they are aware of a proposed Whale Sanctuary Project in Nova Scotia, but call it “not operational”.
The park also holds four dolphins, two sea lions, two seals and various deer and bears.
“Marineland clearly does not have the resources to care for these animals, and further delaying a decision on next steps amounts to continued neglect and abuse,” said Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner in a statement.
“They should be relocated to a safe and suitable marine sanctuary that can help facilitate this process and ensure the wellbeing of the whales.”
The future of Marineland remains uncertain with the park still up for sale despite a year of being closed.
