Flu and Covid-19 vaccines will be available to the general public for free to everyone six months and older with an Ontario address starting Monday.
Dr. Joanne Kearon, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit, encourages everyone to get their vaccines for the upcoming respiratory illness season. “We saw activity through the summer and we are now starting to see an increase. We’re not yet in what we would consider respiratory season, but that’s why it’s important to get your vaccinations now so that when respiratory season hits, you are protected.” says Dr. Kearon.
Since the flu virus changes each year, MLHU encourages the community to get their vaccinations every year.
“The flu shot and now the COVID-19 shot as well, are modified every single year to best respond to the variance of those viruses that circulating that season, and so in comparison to other viruses, it’s something that you need to get on an annual basis to make sure that it is most effective.” says Dr. Kearon
Dr. Kearon also highlights the importance of not only keeping yourself safe, but the community as well.
“The sooner you get immunized the sooner you’ll enjoy that protection against the viruses that are circulating. Outbreaks in residential settings are rising, and our hospital partners are seeing an increase in Emergency Department visits and hospitalizations.” says Kearon.
MLHU and Dr. Kearon suggest speaking to your healthcare provider about the vaccinations. Most pharmacies will provide both vaccines and you are able to get “one in each arm.” says Dr. Kearon.
