Families packed Gainsborough Road on Saturday morning as the Hyde Park Santa Claus Parade brought music, floats and an early dose of holiday excitement to northwest London. The annual parade stepped off at 10 a.m. near Sherwood Forest Mall, with people lining the street long before Santa arrived.
The Hyde Park Lions Club and the Hyde Park Business Improvement Association hosted the event. Along with the usual mix of holiday characters and community groups, organizers asked families to bring food donations for Londoners who may be struggling this season. Volunteers dressed as elves walked the route and collected items from spectators as the floats went by.
One attendee during the parade felt it was a nice break from what has been a tough year financially. One man said the cost of living has made the holidays feel different, noting that “Christmas came fast this year” and “things are expensive right now.” He said the parade helped lift his spirits, adding that being there “changes my mood, even if it is just for a moment.”
Several community groups took part, including the Orkona unit of the Canadian Army Veterans. Member Gigi, who also goes by Jillian, said their group joins the parade every year as part of their motorcycle raffle fundraiser. She said they only sell 3,000 tickets at $20 each and keep the proceeds local once the motorcycle is paid off. She said the veterans support Parkwood Institute, Remembrance Gardens, shelters, soup kitchens and even animal-related programs.
Local businesses also made the trip, including Proofline Farm from Ilderton. Representative Janonne McNaughton said her group always enjoys the parade because “it is a great community event,” adding that it is well organized and fun for kids. She said businesses pay to join, which helps support charities in the area, and pointed out their inflatable cows are a crowd favourite for families along the route.
Kids collected candy, waved to Santa and dropped off handwritten letters, continuing a tradition that has become a familiar part of the Hyde Park parade. Letters were accepted along the route as well as through email.
With clear skies and a strong turnout, Saturday’s parade kicked off the holiday season with a focus on community, generosity and a bit of early Christmas magic.
