Hockey player Art Quigg is super active even in his late 80’s.
Quigg is a part of the London Senior Hockey League who play at Western Fairs Sports Centre. This week Quigg played in back to back days.
It’s such a well organized group here with so many people maintaining this hockey league,” Quigg says when talking about the Senior hockey league.
Quigg started playing hockey at the young age of 8 years old, he also is originally from New Brunswick.
“Being from New Brunswick and living in a small village, we had ice all the time. In the wintertime, we had a pond in our front yard.”
Quigg continues, saying “I learned to skate at 5 and the next thing was to get a hockey stick into my hand and carry on from there.”
Quigg also stays active by working at his garage which is named “Art Quigg’s Service. He runs the shop with his son Wayne.
This isn’t the only hockey rec league he’s been a part of. He’s also played a league located in Thamesford and also a Sunday night league although he stopped going to that league when he was 70.
Quigg mentions that he still stays in contact with some players he used to play with years ago “People I played with in the Thamesford league back in ’75 still stop off at the garage to talk.”
Quigg feels good that he is getting recognition for him being what is believed to be the oldest hockey player in London.
“The people support me, the teammates support me and health wise right now I’m feeling real good and I participate with the players and they even look up to me because someday they’re going to follow in my footsteps.”
The league has 360 players with 3 different ages with those being junior, intermediate and the senior league.
