Star Wars fans are everywhere. The series has been around for almost 50 years, and has no signs of slowing down.
After Lucasfilm was bought by Disney, they have been continuing the stories. But, not everyone is happy with the stories that have came out. Film professor John Plantus, who is a lifelong Star Wars fan, feels Disney is doing too much.
“I think some of the shows are certainly better than others. Most of them seem to have a clearer purpose or story to tell than the sequels did,” John says, “I think in some ways though, it does sort of carry on with that Disney compulsion to rush things out, to get as much Star Wars out there as possible.”
With a lot of Star Wars media being released, nine seasons of shows since the start of 2024, some people are growing tired of Star Wars, feeling it’s becoming oversaturated.
John says, “…if I’m tired of Star Wars, maybe there’s a problem.”
Despite the abundance of shows being released, there hasn’t been a Star Wars movie since “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. This movie bombed, being the worst revenue turn out of the sequel trilogy, and sitting around a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Before the release, Disney had announced an abundance of Star Wars films, with any yet to see the screen. A Lando Calrissian movie starring Donald Glover was said to be in the works, a movie titled “Rogue Squadron”, a trilogy directed by Rian Johnson (the director of The Last Jedi), and even a Rey trilogy were all said to be development.
Most of these movies have had no updates in the last five years, or have been outright cancelled.
So, where is Star Wars headed?
Next May sets the release for the highly anticipated “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie, which is continuation of the critically acclaimed three-season show.
After that, 2027 sets the release for the first post-sequel Star Wars film. It’s said to star London’s very own Ryan Gosling. Not much is known about the movie, but there are many theories around who the main villain will be.
Aside from the movies, there are many TV shows set to come out in the next couple years. Fans are finally getting a Maul show, after it was teased in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” back in 2018.
Star Wars is still being made, and it won’t stop anytime soon. No matter how much criticism or love fans will give the new movies and shows, Disney will never stop making Star Wars as long as they make money.
