With the holiday season right around the corner so many individuals are spending tons of money on presents for family and friends. This can lead to not having enough money to eat thanks to everything being so expensive in the present day.
The Nazem Kadri foundation sent the London Food bank a 50 thousand dollar donation which will be used to help feed so many individuals this year.
Co-Executive director of the food bank Jane Roy says “$50,000 goes a long way. Right now we’re spending about $3 million on food, about a million for ourselves, and about $2 million for other agencies.”
These numbers show the realization on how much food banks truly cost in order to run them. Food banks even run heavily on volunteers. With the London Food Bank being volunteer based.
Roy also says thanks to inflation, the food prices have been going up and down which makes it even harder for an organization like hers to get food without donations.
“Even a 2% inflation overall means people on fix incomes still are 2% less where they need to be. And then with the food inflation being closer to 6% or 7% that really makes it difficult.
Roy also mentions that some of the donated items they currently need the most are some of the most expensive ones.
“Baby diapers, baby formula, menstrual hygiene products. I think those are the products we need the most right now.”
Mo Haidar from the Nazem Kadri Foundation says helping the London food bank means a lot to him.
“We know that food insecurity and the need especially around the holidays is very high. there’s a big demand on the food bank within the London community.”
Haidar continues saying “So to be able to give back and help even just a little bit is rewarding and it feels good but also you know that it’s getting into the hands of the people that need it the most.”
This is the Nazem Kadri Foundation’s second time helping the London Food Bank out.
