The winter Olympics are set to start on February 6th in Milan and Cortina. Hockey Canada will be sending four athletes from their hometown of London, Ontario, to Italy in hopes of competing for gold.
Nick Suzuki
Drafted in 2017, the 26 year old center will be making his Olympic debut. Suzuki is having a career year with 64 points and 18 goals in just 66 games. He is on pace to beat his point record of 89 last year and could even reach the 100-point mark for the first time in his career. Suzuki never played for the London Knights but played one season with the Jr. Knights and one season with the London Nationals.
Bo Horvat
After being drafted in 2013 by the Canucks, Horvat found his new home on the New York Islanders after being traded in 2022. Despite playing for an American NHL team, Horvat will be suiting up to play for team Canada for the first time in his career. Early in his career, Horvat led the London Knights to two OHL titles and three memorial cup visits.
Drew Doughty
Drafted in 2008, Doughty secured his spot on the 2010 winter Olympics roster and secured gold in B.C. for Canada. The 36-year-old veteran lives and breathes international hockey, as he also secured gold in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and will be looking to secure his third alongside “Captain Canada,” Sidney Crosby.
Julia Gosling
6th overall in the 2024 PWHL draft by the Toronto Sceptre, Julia Gosling was selected as one of the youngest women on the team Canada roster. However, Gosling is no stranger to representing Canada on the international stage. Gosling won bronze and gold medals at the 2018 and 2019 U18 World Championships, and winning gold against team USA at the 2024 IIHF women’s world championships. Gosling played for the London Jr. Devilettes from 2015-2019 before playing at St Lawrence University.
The Womens Olympic Hockey team will be playing preliminary games starting Thursday with their first match against Finland, and the NHL will still be on until the 5th and then the teams will travel to Italy in preparation for the official games on February 12.
