February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on the past, recognize progress and celebrate Black excellence.
At Fanshawe College, the Black Student Club is creating space for both celebration and conversation on campus.
For club members, Black History Month is also about growth, pride and visibility.
“To me, Black History Month means thinking about how far we’ve come as a race,” said Ashley Williams, treasurer and secretary of the Black Student Club. “It’s not only about the struggles, but everything that we’ve accomplished.”
Williams said she draws inspiration from Black figures who demonstrate strong values and leadership.
“I look up to people who have good values and morals as a Black person, and the things they’re doing to represent being Black,” she said.
Williams added that one of the biggest misconceptions about Black History Month is that it focuses solely on hardship.
“It’s not just about the struggles, but everything that we are accomplishing in modern day,” she said. “We have positive things to celebrate, too, and we should showcase that.”
Williams said what makes the Black Student Club special is the commitment shown by its members, with students consistently showing up, participating and working to build something that will last beyond their time at Fanshawe College.
