Wednesday morning, The Government of Canada released a travel advisory for Cuba.
In their advisory, they said that Cuba is at a “high degree of caution due to worsening shortages of electricity, fuel and basic necessities including food, water, and medicine, which can also affect resorts.”
Margaret Dubinski, a frequent visitor of Cuba during the cold seasons of Canadian winter says that she still wants to go despite the advisory. She says “Travel advisories to Cuba happen all the time.” Nothing changes her love for Cuba.
She then goes on to say that every time she goes, she always brings gifts for the people of Cuba since “their economic state isn’t desirable.” She helps in any way she can by bringing chocolate or dental products she gets from dentists.
She also says that shes been going to Cuba for the last 15 years and she goes at least once a year. In the last two months she’s been to Cuba twice already. When asked about her favourite parts of Cuba she says “The sun, the beaches and the very friendly people.”
A member of a “Melia Costa Rey Lovers” fan group on Facebook claims that the advisory isn’t area specific and that places like Cayo Coco have their own electrical grid so “no worries there at all,” they said.
They also said “Please remember that if Cuba is rationing fuel, they will always make sure that it does not affect safety and tourism. That is after all their bread and butter”
XFM also reached out to several local travel agencies in London and neighbouring cities and no one has called to ask about potential dangers since the advisory had just come out.
