The Fanshawe Student Union (FSU) and Fanshawe International is welcoming the year of the horse as they host their annual Lunar New Year celebration Saturday.
Depending on the cycle of moon, Lunar New Year has a different date each year but is usually set around late January to the middle of February.
The FSU will be holding celebrations on Feb. 14 in preparation for the holiday on Feb 17.
To celebrate, cultural clubs from Fanshawe International will be showcasing different games, traditions, and performances throughout the night.
“I love to see how excited the people get, cause I know what it is like being in another culture,” said Cami Ariza the events and activities organizer at the FSU
The FSU’s Lunar New Year events in previous years have been popular for students. Ariza said last year the event was “so full that nobody could move.”
Lunar New Year is important for many Asian cultures that follow the lunar cycle as opposed to the Gregorian calendar. The holiday has been celebrated over thousands of years, with many traditions being passed down through generations.
“I like to sweep the house, you sweep out the bad omens and clear out for the new year,” said Jayvee Macapugay, a student at Fanshawe College.
A common superstition is on days before Lunar New Year, many families will collectively clean the house to sweep away “bad omens” from the previous year to make space for incoming good luck, wealth, and prosperity coming from the new year.
Celebrations will take place at Forwell Hall from 5-7 p.m.
