A rise in criminal activities and riots has taken place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, causing travel advisories.
The Mexican military killed drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, prompting this development.
Online photos show burning cars in the middle of the street, and airlines have cancelled flights to and from the area, leaving Canadians trapped in the city.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is ruling out the deployment of aircraft to evacuate Canadians from Mexico.
“In my conversation with Foreign Minister de la Fuente last evening, he indicated that the situation should stabilize in the coming days and that this was a targeted operation which will not continue,” Anand said during a news conference.
“The situation remains fluid. All Canadians in affected regions should heed the direction of local authorities and travel only when it is safe to do so,” She added.
Global Affairs Canada is urging Canadians in Mexico to register with the department and monitor travel advisories for the latest security updates.
