A tourist bus in the Dominican Republic crashed Sunday, leaving two Canadians dead and almost 20 other people were injured, according to local media there.
The bus crashed in the La Romana area of the island, and authorities say the accident drew a response of 12 ambulances to the scene.
“We are aware of a tourist bus accident involving Canadians in the Dominican Republic and are in contact with local authorities,” the Canadian Embassy to the Dominican Republic wrote in a post on X . “We recognize the stress this situation may cause impacted individuals and loved ones and are providing consular assistance.”

Ten of the injured passengers were sent to hospital where one was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both fatalities were originally described just as foreign nationals, and reports now say that both passengers killed in the crash were Canadians.
The bus was carrying tourists from a resort in the popular Punta Cana when it slid off the road and crashed.
The total number of Canadians involved in the crash is still unknown at this time.
The Dominican Republic has one of the world’s highest traffic fatality rates, with almost 3,000 annual deaths on the roads.
