The Western Mustangs men’s basketball team has not finished above .500 since 2009-10. That year they finished 12-10.
But don’t tell that to Greg Morrow. He doesn’t care about history.
The senior forward led the Mustangs with 16 PPG and nearly 8 RPG last season, and has high expectations for this year’s squad.
“We’re looking to get to the final four, that’s our goal right now. I think we can do it. As long as we keep improving throughout the year I think we have a good chance of getting there.”
He explains what is different between last year’s squad and this year’s.
“We’re more of a cerebral team. We run the plays really well. In the past we’ve had trouble executing and I like how we are executing early on. I just like the work ethic of all the guys.”
Morrow is the only one of last year’s top three scorers to return to the team. He knows the importance of being a leader.
“It’s definitely a bigger role. Me, Quinn [Henderson], Tony [Spiridis], Charlie [Drouin], we’re all older guys now. We’ve got a bit of experience behind us so it’s really important for us to lead the rookies.”
Morrow says he spent most of the offseason working on his all-around game, specifically on his pull-up jump shot. If the Mustangs around him can match his energy on the court, perhaps this year’s squad will have a chance to make a deep run.
