A 1990s fashion icon is shaping what people are wearing today, as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s minimalist style makes a comeback.
The renewed interest follows the February release of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, now one of FX’s most-watched series on streaming platforms. The series has reintroduced Kennedy’s signature look, defined by clean lines, neutral tones and understated pieces.
The series has helped bring renewed attention to a style that reflects a growing trend toward minimalist, long lasting fashion.
At Fanshawe College, Linda Jenken, program coordinator of the Fashion Marketing and Management program, says the resurgence reflects what she describes as fashion fatigue.
“There have been so many trends that have been released. It is almost too much choice for

people in fashion today,” Jenken said. She says Kennedy’s style stands out because it offers simplicity in a trend-heavy market.
“This minimalistic look or kind of effortless chic that she portrays is easy dressing but also classic,” she said.
Jenken says the shift is part of what she calls investment dressing, where consumers move away from short lived trends and instead choose staple pieces such as tailored blazers or crisp white shirts that can be worn across multiple seasons.
She says Kennedy’s influence also comes from the way she presented herself.
Often photographed in simple outfits while avoiding attention, Kennedy became known for a style that felt effortless and personal, something that continues to resonate today.
For students in the Fashion Marketing and Management program, that influence shows how they define their own style.
“I think it is such a classic minimalistic look. I really resonate with that look because that is kind of what my brand wants to look like,” said Ffion Williams, a student in the program.
Williams says the appeal comes from how simple the style is while still looking put together.

Sage Johnson, who is also in the program, says the recent series has helped bring Kennedy’s style back into focus.
“Since the TV show came out, she has been super popular and influencing a lot of fashion trends,” Johnson said.
Johnson says many students are moving toward simpler outfits that are easier to style and wear day to day.
Both students say the style also carries a sense of confidence.
“She is very feminine and very confident, and I think that makes people feel more confident in themselves,” Johnson said.
This fashion resurgence reflects a growing preference for clothing that is both practical and expressive. Minimalist fashion allows people to define their personal style without relying on constantly changing trends.
