Spring has arrived, and Fanshawe College students are already growing plants inside the campus greenhouse.
In the horticulture program, students get hands-on training by working with hydrangeas and other crops. The controlled environment helps them begin the growing season earlier and maintain better plant quality.
Second-year student Bryn Hanson says the experience is shaping his future.
“I’m loving the program. I’ve been helping grow our hydrangea crop. Horticulture is one of my passions, and I’d like to pursue a career in it,” he said.
He explains that hydrangeas are simple to care for and can be planted outdoors after the last frost in May. With proper maintenance, they return each year.
“The flowers can change colour depending on the soil. You can get blues, pinks, purples, and whites,” he said.
This season’s plants are strong and healthy, with fewer pest issues.
The facility also runs plant sales, offering hydrangeas and indoor tropical options.
Students say the program builds practical skills and prepares them for jobs in the industry.
