Baseball season is off to a hopeful start in London, where the city’s home team players and fans are hoping to “win it all,” this year.
The London Majors went on the road this week, beating Brantford on Sunday, getting cancelled due to weather in Chatham Tuesday, and heading to Kitchener Friday. The team is expected to make the playoffs again this year, with hopes to redeem themselves after a surprising upset loss to the Guelph Royals last season.
Excitement was in the air Friday, as thousands of fans attended the home opener at Labatt Park, where catcher Eduardo De Oleo rewarded them early by smashing a two-run homer in the first inning and the team went on to win 4-2 over Barrie.
“The fans make it a huge advantage for us and always back us up when we need it” said outfielder Tucker Zdunich.
“Our expectation is to win it all and get revenge from last season,” said Zdunich.
The Majors have always stated that the “best fans” in the CBL are in London, it always has seems that they are engaged with the game even before the first pitch.
“It’s a brand new team, brought back some old faces as well, and with the Canadian baseball league (CBL) it’s exciting to see what this season will bring” said Amy, a Majors diehard who has been coming to games for almost a decade.
London has been playing a Labatt park since 1925 winning 14 Intercounty baseball league championships, the park is the oldest baseball diamond in the world that opened in 1877 hosting many baseball legends such as Ty Cobb and Satchel Paige.
