Artist, Karin Jones new art piece brings not only thought provoking insight to the relationship between African identity and Canadian history but opens the door to conversation on topics many may not think of discussing.
Jones’ piece was previously exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and is now located at McIntosh Gallery at the University of Western Ontario. The piece is a Victorian mourning dress, however is created out of braided synthetic hair extensions.
When XFM News asked Jones about the choice to use hair extensions within her piece, she described the implications surrounding collecting the human hair that many may not realize. Various people in parts of India, for example, give up their hair as a sacrifice in Temples, where it is then sold to companies to create hair wefts.
This piece of art allows people to examines topics such as African identity, colonialism, slavery etc.
