Getting around campus is getting kicked into high-gear.
The Fanshawe Student Union began the school year by launching their bike-sharing program last week.
“I sat down and wrote an 11-page paper. I did a lot of research,” Carlie Forsythe, President of the FSU said. “I researched the other bike-share programs at different schools and cities.”
The program received a $10,000 budget to test its popularity among students.
The FSU partnered with Outspokin Cycles to supply the bicycles.
“We’ve used over half of the budget for 10 bikes,” Forsythe said. “They are all brand-new, they have new parts on them. The bikes come with helmets, locks, lights, reflectors, bells and a basket. They have everything possible.”
Forsythe filed a work order to have the bike racks installed outside the Outback Shack near the patio.
The FSU is keeping an eye on bike racks in the SUB courtyard that could transformed into a secondary location.
“Everything will be running from the Biz Booth, although everything is being ran out of the office temporarily,” Forsythe said. “By next semester, we are hoping to run it out of the library through media loan services.”
Forsythe says that more bicycles might be added to the program later in the school year.
Students will have approximately seven days to enjoy the bicycles.
The FSU could implement fewer days if the demand for the bicycles increases.
