When a car driven by young vandals left donuts in a soccer field at Stoneycreek Baptist Church and unfit for play, NorWest Optimist Soccer Club was left scrambling to adjust their game schedule.
Parkway Gardens made generous donations of soil, seeds, and sod to fix the pitch faster than the original estimate. Thanks to the work done by Birchcrest Landscaping Co. over the long weekend, the pitch should be playable within a month.
Lead volunteer for this project, Janet Johnson, says Birchcrest has been working with NorWest for a long time, and they’re grateful for their assistance.
“It shows a sense of community.”
Johnson adds that this was an unfortunate event, and that the youth who play on these fields shouldn’t be put at risk.
The soccer club offers recreational and competitive leagues for children 4 to 18 years old.
Johnson says the biggest issue facing them now is irrigation. She says the field will need to be watered often and thoroughly before the grass grows again, and that they’re relying on the church for further help in such regards.
If no other bumps in the road appear, the field will be usable in three weeks time.
When the incident happened in late February and early March, security footage from church cameras recorded two young men driving in circles on the field, damaging the grass.
