This Tuesday marks the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, a day where many Canadians gave their lives for the invasion of Normandy during World War II.
The 1st Hussars held their annual ceremony dedicated to D-Day at Victoria Park over the weekend. This year’s service was accompanied with a march, a few horses, and a surprise for a veteran in the audience.
At 93 years old, Aris Domnas, never thought to apply for medals after finishing his military service. Taking note of this, The 1st Hussars spent the past two years working towards making sure Domnas got the praise he deserved.

Domnas says he was “totally surprised” when the presentation of his medals rolled around. The retired Bio-Chemistry professor never expected anything like this to happen at this year’s service.

London-Fanshawe MP Irene Mathyssen says, along with being able to thank a veteran, the ceremony was also a victory for those wanting to honour the service provided by the brave soldiers . When asked about the importance of remembering D-Day, Mathyssen adds “We can never forget what it cost this country in terms of young men and women.”
