With snowfall in the forecast and temperatures dropping across the Forest City, there is worry for individuals without adequate shelter arrangements.
Late last week, London Police reported they found a man in medical distress in an East London parking lot, likely suffering from exposure to the elements. The man was discovered around 4 a.m., with temperatures reaching around the -12 C mark, with a wind chill making it feel like -19 C.
As temperatures only figure to get colder as we continue our plunge into the winter months, London’s homeless population looks to community shelters as an option to stay warm this season.
Unity Project, a local shelter, provides emergency accomodations for at-risk individuals including a warm bed to sleep in, full meals, and basic hygeine supplies. For individuals just looking to warm up, Unity Project also offers in drop in services for individuals affected by the frigid weather.
Executive Director of Unity Project, Chuck Lazenby, reminds the community that at risk individuals suffer beyond the winter months.
“While the cold weather is certainly a concern, homelessness is an issue year round.”
Lazenby encourages Londoners to help the cause by donating weather appropriate clothing like hats, gloves, scarves, and winter jackets, in addition to monetary donations to support Unity Project efforts.
