The season of game announcements are upon us! With the new Call of Duty being revealed later today during a live stream, Bethesda announcing Rage 2 and recent Nintendo Switch Pokemon rumors abuzz it is no surprise that EA and DICE would purchase a first class ticket on the hype train.
Comedian and Daily Show host Trevor Noah announced yesterday that he would be hosting the reveal event on May 23rd, Then taking a drink from his coffee cup revealed the official logo for the game… a V. This simple title has since launched fans into a flurry of speculation.
Now it is important to note that the V could mean many different things for the setting of the game, A Vietnam setting, A World War 2 setting or a modern setting. The most likely of these being a World War Two setting, With the V not only being the roman numeral for the number 5 but also representing victory. With the previous Battlefield title taking on a First World War setting, putting players into the front lines of World War 2 seems like the most logical step.
Besides mere speculation there are some key details to back up this setting, The biggest one being the symbolism in the V. Well V could easily just mean 5, DICE has been know to put meaning in their titles, 2016’s Battlefield 1 was the 11th mainline game in the franchise (including the Bad Company series, However the free to play games were left out of this total) However the 1 in the name represented the First World War being the start of “All-out war”. So it is not far fetched that DICE would put in V not only to represent 5 but also to mean victory. What many know as the peace sign, bunny ears or whatever name you call making a V with your fingers, actually began in the second world war by the allies to represent victory and unity among allied nations. This is the strongest link to the world war 2 setting before later evolving into the peace sign during the 1960’s.
In their blog post DICE also mentioned “every fight is different and brought to life across unexpected theatres of war.” Multiple fronts on a war would rule out a Vietnam setting but not necessarily a modern one. world war 2 however saw many different theatres, from Japanese Isles to Indian jungles and of course the European and Soviet theatres.
The final detail pointing towards a world war 2 setting is the recent weapons added to Battlefield 1. With classic world war 2 era weapons making appearances in the first world war shooter like the British Webley revolver and even a prototype for the American Thompson sub-machine gun, it’s almost as if the developers are giving us a taste of what is to come. Looking back to Battlefield: Hardline, the games late expansion packs added the Lewis machine gun and the Springfield bolt action rifle, both weapons were world war 1 era and could be found in Battlefield one. Could the new world war 2 era weapons in Battlefield one be a nice hint from DICE?
There are many details and hints towards a Second World War setting and the general feeling in the Battlefield community seems to point towards this as well. World war 2 is indeed a safe bet but DICE could always pull a rabbit out of their hat and surprise us all. The reveal will be happening on May 23rd at 4 pm on the Battlefield YouTube page.
