Free donuts!
Salvation Army is celebrating National Donut Day at Covent Garden Market in London until 1 pm today (June 1st). The organization created Donut Day in 1938 to honor the “donut lassies” – women who served donuts to soldiers in the trenches during World War I.
To celebrate, Londoners can just walk in and get their free donuts from the Salvation Army. Public Relations, Shannon Wise explains that donuts served during that period provided a little taste of home for the soldiers.
“People can come in and have free donuts. It is a hot day, so bring the kids, play some games that we have going on, and take a moment to think about our veterans of war,” says Wise.
After 2 PM the organization will celebrate the date at the Parkwood Institute with veterans of war.
“They run a veteran care program there and we also will going to give them free donuts, and share some of the experience that they have at front line during the war.”
Wise also says that during the Great Depression, National Donut Day brought funds and awareness to The Salvation Army’s life-changing social service programs.
