Smoke Free
As of November 1st 2018, Fanshawe campuses and properties will become smoke-free.
Smoking any form of tobacco (including chewing tobacco), marijuana, vaping and the use of e-cigarettes will be banned from Fanshawe property.
When smoking, students must exit the premises. Failing to compile with the new regulation can result in warnings, fines, and/or disciplinary actions.
Smoking in personal owned cars on campus will not be allowed, and using marijuana while driving can face serious charges.
Marijuana
Once cannabis is legal on Wednesday, October 17, marijuana will be legally allowed to smoke wherever tobacco is permitted.
Fanshawe has expressed in a mass e-mail sent to students that “Fanshawe will provide accommodation for the medical use of cannabis. With the exception of medical cannabis, edibles are not permitted on campus.” The e-mail also added that students in residence will not be allowed to grow or distribute cannabis.
Intoxication
As well as becoming smoke free with the legalization of marijuana, entering the college while intoxicated from any substance is prohibited.
Unless there is a medical exemption for using marijuana, Fanshawe believes a smoke free campus is best for student wellness.
Campus Opinion
The change of policy has brought differing opinions among the college and a raise in concerns.
Employees
– effected break times
– not allowed to leave property on break times
Students
– cold in the winter season
– inconvenient between class times
– harder during mid-terms and exams
As there are both positive and negative impacts of becoming smoke free, the overall goal is to create a healthy learning environment for all students and members of the Fanshawe community.
