Why London is called the forest city

The city of London has been dubbed the “forest city” for a while and it got residents wondering how the city got its name. One of the first to give the city its name was Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe. London officially became a city in 1855

Today the city of London is home to  494,069 people and growing each year. Jill-Anne Spence Manager of Urban Forestry for the city of London says that it is pretty simple how London got its name “we have been called the forest city since 1855 and its a simple message, when London was getting established there was a dense forest here. So when people came upon the new village of London they were kind of surprised to see this city amongst a forest”. She also says that London has adpoted an urban forest strategy in 2014

Spence also says the Londoners do care about the forest and take pride in that name ” Another reason why I can think of on why we are called the forest city is because Londoners care about the forest here, there’s a lot of different things that Londoners have done the last couple decades to as far as tree planting and tree protection”.  She also says that this is a great time of year for residence to inspect their trees.
