Light Therapy Lamps will soon be available for Londoners at all library locations to help people suffering from SAD.
“Out of some donor’s funding, we were able to purchase 20 lights for all 16 branches. That will help us equalize access. The lamps can be expensive for people to buy on their own, but now we are able to provide them free of charge,” says Anne O’Sullivan, manager of customer service and branch operations with the London Public Library.
She adds this is part of the initiative with other Canadian cities to help with the stigma around mental health, and also to support the wellness of all Londoners.
“These lamps help individuals with Seasonal Affective Disorder just in those grey and rainy days of winter. Some people find it helpful to be by a light that mimics the natural light of the spring and the summer,” says O’Sullivan.
Some of the most common symptoms are:
- sleep problems
- irritability
- change in appetite and weight
- and fatigue
Londoners will be able to make use of these new lamps starting January 30 in support of Bell Let’s Talk Day.
How to use a light therapy lamp
- Sit about 2 feet away next to the lamp and turn it on.
- Let the light shine on your face. However, do not stare into the light.
- It is recommended people use the lamp no more than 30 minutes since it can cause mild side-effects such as headaches and nausea.
