Ever wonder how photographers got to where they are to this day? Well if you have, here’s the journey of one photographer who has been working at his craft for quite some time.
Matt Hiscox has been “Capturing emotion in every shot” for the last 11 years, and now he is at a point where his work is being recognized and has caught the attention of various sports teams. Before we list them, you’re probably wondering “what does it take to be a photographer?”
“Being a photographer, it takes time and dedication, along with a passion to get better, and to create a story with a single shot. You’re not going to get very far in this field if you can’t have people dive into your images, and feel what you’re feeling, or see what you’re seeing in the same shot. It takes a lot of time, you can’t just pick up a camera one day and say I’m a professional photographer, you have to work at it.”
Hiscox has devoted his life to capturing some of London’s greatest sports moments. He is currently with The London Majors, London Knights, and with the Fanshawe College Varsity teams. He got there by putting the time in.
“On a good week I cover up to four sporting events, so by going to the event, taking the pictures, editing the pictures, I’d say I spend up to almost 30 hours a week working at my craft. And trying to get those good shots, and at the same time improve, because there’s always going to be room to improve.”
11 years is a long time to wait before getting that big break, but there is a way to make those 11 years move a little faster.
“Love what you do, and do it often, the more work you do, the more you can improve and make time go by a little faster.”
Life behind the camera lens can be pretty fun, once the work you do is recognized. Like everything else in life nothing is given it is earned. Hiscox, earned his chances and opportunities by putting in the work. So, if you ever want to try living life behind a camera lens, put in the work and enjoy doing it. Photography is not all about the money you can make once you’ve made it to the big time… it’s about “Capturing emotion in every shot” -Matt Hiscox
