This Saturday from 6-10 PM a group of Londoners are hosting an event in an effort to raise awareness and donations for hurricane relief in the Bahamas.
Fashion for a Cause is being put on by Fearless Gyals Unite, a non-profit organization, founded by Shawny McKenzie. She’s a native of The Bahamas and a 2019 Ms. London Contestant. Entrance to the event is free, though they are asking for donations of any kind.
Fanshawe alumnist, Lexian Brown, says they’re looking for some things that you wouldn’t necessarily think of.
“One of the things that we actually are looking for is [we’re looking for] tools. So we’re trying to get more tools and stuff down so we can start building stuff again. Which will get a lot of the guys and the women back on their feet… Building new houses.”
Brown is a rapper, who will be performing at the event under his stage name Jaghuligin.
Fanshawe avionics student, Muhquezzen Nixon, will also be performing as DJ Fresh Prince. Nixon is from New Providence, but says that he feels the need to help those who were most devestated by Hurricane Dorian, the people from Freeport and Abaco.
“Abaco people, they lost everything. They lost their houses, they lost some family members, they lost businesses… Everything that had value to them, they lost it.”
Both of them say that the people of the Bahamas are proud and strong and that the donations are the first step to them getting themselves back on their feet.
“The black in our flag represents strength… I think it’s just a minor setback, before a major comeback.” Says Nixon.
They’re not looking for hand outs, just a hand up.
For anyone in London looking to donate outside of the Fashion for a Cause event there’s an official dropoff point at Skyzone.
