Lawson research center has been considered one of the top health research centers in the country for the past six years. The center deals with research in three categories; Mental health, Mobility and activity, and Cognitive vitality and brain health.
Cheryl Forchuk, the associate director at the center shared some information on what they deal with in the category of Cognitive vitality and brain health,
“A lot of it relates to how we prevent problems, slow down problems, and identify risks and address issues when they arrive. People think of Alzheimer’s dieses, most commonly. Which is a type dementia. Several of our programs are looking at dementia, early signs, how can we slow the progress.”
Amer Burhan, one of the researchers who deals with cognitive vitality and brain health at the center shared more information on what the center does in the field of neuropsychiatry,
“Neuropsychiatry refers to symptoms or illness that have behavior manifestation of behavioral manifestations of a brain dieses the main issue we’ve been studying is Alzheimer’s dieses.
He also shared what the brain health portion deals with,
“The brain health part is mainly trying to use tools such as the magnetic seizer therapy or magnetic stimulation to treat illnesses like depression.”
One of the studies going on in the cognitive vitality and brain health portion of the center is the Gait and Brain program. Forchuk shares what this study is
“Some of the work their crosses between the mobility program and the other programs. Exercise and remaining active is one of the key strategies for sowing down issues related to diminishing function in brain health and cognitive vitality.”
Burhan shared more specifics about the studies background,
“Trying to detect changes I people walking, when they are using their attention and cognition. Younger age groups can Walk and talk and do everything at the same time. As you get older it becomes more challenging to think and be distracted by cognitive process and walking”
The study has been going on for more than a year and is not limited to Lawson, Burhan shares the feedback they have gotten from the program so far,
“So far theirs a significant impact of the combination of exercise and cognitive training, or example to enhance people’s ability to remember things.”
