The London Cares Curb Hunger campaign, in partnership with the London Food Bank, will kick off it’s 24th year on June 3 to June 13.
Between June 3 to June 13, residents are encouraged to participate in multiple ways:
Financial Donations
Residents can donate online at www.londonfoodbank.ca . These are vital to the Food Bank to aquire fresh food, and to give the Food Bank the necessary resources to help reach London’s most vulnerable, including residents and families living unsheltered.
Plant a Row, Grow a Row
The London Food bank is also encouraging those who grow their own produce to sign up here to help. Growing produce at home is a great activity for families and households, and any extra produce you may have grown, can be donated to the Food Bank.
Food Donations
Non-perishable food items can be left in bins at some participating grocery stores. You can check which locations here. Fresh and non-perishable foods will continue to be accepted at the Food Bank, located at 926 Leathorne Street, but physical distancing measures will still be in place.
Community ReFresh
For three years, the London Food Bank and City of London have partnered up with Food Banks Canada and a number of grocery stores to rescue food before it expires. Over 800 pounds of food items have been donated from participating stores. This food would’ve been put in the landfill if it had been left to expire.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there had to be some changes to the program this year. Those include:
- No pickup of non-perishable food donations at curbside. Due to the gradual decline in the use of the curbside portion, this option was not going to be used in 2020.
- Fire Stations will not be used as drop off centres this year
London Mayor Ed Holder says that this 24 year will be a success
“The London Cares Curb Hunger campaign is the longest running partnership of its kind in Canada,” he said. “Especially during times like these where the impact of COVID-19 has touched so many Londoners, I know the generosity and compassion of our community coming together will make this 24th year a success.”
Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director of the London Food Bank, says it’s now more than ever important to support those who rely on the Food Bank.
“The need for financial and food donations continues to grow each year, and we continue to focus on increasing donations of fresh food,” she said. “Now, perhaps more than ever, it is important to support the more than 25,000 individuals who rely on the London Food Bank in addition to some of the most vulnerable in our community that require additional assistance.”
