15-year old Branden Pettit had his organs recently donated to 4 different people. The St. Thomas native died after a skateboard crash in Port Stanley. He was visiting family in the city and had the accident while skateboarding with another teenager down a hill on the night of October 3rd.
Pettit’s heart, liver, pancreas, and kidneys were all successfully donated, but his lungs couldn’t be used due to an infection.
Ralf, Branden’s mom described him as a typical teenage boy who loved video games, spending time with friends and family and most of all skateboarding.
In his name and to keep his memory and legacy alive, the family started the Lid Up 4 Branden foundation. The project has been collecting helmets to distribute to children and adults in the community and are also using this opportunity to spread the importance of wearing a helmet when skateboarding. biking, and or doing any other dangerous sport.
More than 80 helmets have already been donated and distributed to the St. Thomas skate park. Hats and stickers with the emblem “Lid Up” are also being sold to raise more funds.
A celebration to honor Branden’s life is scheduled to happen on October 17th on George Street in Port Stanley at 8pm.
