“My situation was pretty bad. My old workplace cut my hours from full-time to 2-3 days a week and then suddenly for 3 weeks in a row, I got no hours so I struggled to pay bills and buy food,” she says.

“I was hoping someone in the community could help me out and I was shocked at how many people had positive things to say. They were even offering their shoes to other people if I didn’t take them; It was awesome.”

But there was another problem, her feet are a small size and it is difficult to find a pair that would fit.

“They are really solid and safe shoes. They are hard on the bottom to protect me because there’s a lot of metal and scrap where I work,” says Garrison.
“They are ankle boots, size 6 1/2 because I have tiny feet. That was part of the issue to finding shoes, but they really do the job and I really appreciate having them.”
The city’s old east can be known for being sketchy, but what isn’t known is that the most giving hearts reside there.
“Everyone is supportive and attentive. Even if they can’t help directly, they try to give advice. I’ve also seen people post issuing warnings of certain people they have seen going through people’s cars and backyards. They let each other know to look out for that person, so they don’t have the same misfortune,” Garrison adds.

“Anyone out there in the same position, don’t be afraid to reach out. You may get some negative comments, but there are some good people out there left.”
