Environment Canada forecasts Friday’s maximum temperature to reach 34 degrees, but feeling like 45 with the humidex.
Unbearable temperatures will remain throughout the weekend. As a result, the Middlesex-London Health Unit has issued an Extended Heat Warning for London and Middlesex.
Randy Walker, public health inspector with the health unit, recommends families [who want or need to go out], to watch out for the most vulnerable.
“Really pay attention to infants and elderly. Look out for them when they start showing symptoms such as fatigue, blushing or panting. It is very important to take them to a very cool area whether is shade or air conditioning.”
He adds that getting into big crowds such as in festivals and parades, the heat of the people is an addition to the heat from the sun and that can really become problematic.
“If you continue to be exposed to the heat or aggressively participating in physical activities, the temperature of the body can reach levels that are actually dangerous. Ultimately, it can result in a heat stroke, where the body basically suffers severe complications and there is a possibility of dying.”
The Health Unit recommends the following tips to avoid the risks of heat-related illness:
- Stay out of the heat and if you can, seek air conditioning.
- If you have to go out, prepare accordingly to the weather by what wearing large hats and light clothing.
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel very thirsty.
- Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages, as well as coffee, tea and pop.
- Avoid eating heavy meals and using your oven.
