The OCAA is the Ontario Colleges athletic association. All college sports in Ontario are run by the OCAA, this year they decided it would be the safest option to cancel this years season due to COVID-19. Nathan McFadden, Fanshawe’s Manager of Athletics and President of the OCAA, tells us what happened.
“We, the OCAA, just announced that we’ve unfortunately had to make the the necessary but certainly disappointing decision to cancel our winter season. We had made the announcement back in June to cancel the fall season. But just last week, we had to cancel the winter season due to the effects and ramifications of COVID-19 and how sport has been affected in the province of Ontario and across our country.”
Being a student athlete, you are always either doing school work or practice for their sport, but this year has changed that for them, and just like most people, they’ve had to adjust. Najeem Javeed, Fanshawe’s men’s volleyball captain, opens up about the affect this has to them.
“It’s really hard to go from having school and sports balanced so perfectly together for the past four years of my life, to just having online school alone so it’s really tough to jump from that. We’re just trying to keep working on our studies and any workouts we have now to just remind ourselves that it’s going towards something if the season returns next year.”
