With there being talented people all over the world, here locally we have some youth filmmakers. High school student Xavier Wehrli, explains how switching schools made him want to do filmmaking.
“I graduated from Central. I went to Beal to do the BealArt program after graduating. Throughout all of my high school education at Central, I was a visual artist, and I wrote on the side, but it was Beal that made me actually get into film,” Wehrli says. “I’ve only been doing film for less than a year, and I just completely fell in love with it. It’s just a merger of the two things I really like, which are, narrative and visuals.”
Wehrli had handed in four films and one pitch to this year’s Youth Forest City Film Festival. In less than a year of actually becoming a filmmaker, he had won 1st place in best documentary, 1st place best pitch, 2nd place in best narrative, and overall award for “most enterpirsing filmmaker”.

Xavier Wehrli explains how he feels to have won four awards at the film festival this year!
Greg Chruch and Ben Langille are two Fanshawe film students, who were also working on a big film during the summer. They tell me why they decided to pursue a career in filmmaking.
“I wanted to go into filmmaking originally, because of storytelling,” Langille says. “It’s main the main part of filmmaking that I enjoy the most. But once I get bored of filmmaking, I think what will help me stay in industry is the collaboration you have with others. I had a past with music and it requires a lot of individual work. Making a film is way different.”
“It started when I was a kid grabbing a camera, doing silly things, and putting it all together. Now it’s turned into putting so much effort, blood, sweat and tears into a project,” Chruch says. “Seeing an audience just lose their minds and have so much fun and see what they love about your project is really amazing. Film is one of those industry’s where u can translate something from your mind and turn it into something you can show people.”
Wehrli is planning to go to Ryerson University next year to take there film production program. He says that he is fully in on the filmmaking industry, but doesn’t want to do triple a productions.
“I want to be a filmmaker for the rest of my life. Ever since I started has just been this perfect medium for me. I want to make art,” Wehrli says. “I want to work on productions, narrative movies feature length movies that aren’t triple A budget movies. Instead of having like a 300 million budget, there’ll be 10 million. I want to make movies that are thoughtful”
