With the move to online classes for most students, it was a brand new environment for college and university folks. Some were able to adapt while most found online schooling more difficult.
According to Education Data, 63% of students found that online schooling was worse than in-person classes while only 5% found it better.
Catherine Vu is a business major at Western University and even she felt that the change in environment proved to be difficult. “I thought that it was going to be easier because I felt like I had all the time in the world, but online classes can get pretty overwhelming pretty easily,” says Vu.
Exam season proved to be even harder online. A lot of students were in the same shoes struggling to pass their exams.
Vu’s experience preparing for exams were more difficult because of atmosphere. Like many other students, Vu feels like she studies better in a library or with friends.
And when it came time to write the actual exams, students were even dealing with issues then.
“In an in-person exam environment, everyone’s focused and everything’s quiet. But online, there are many factors that just make things harder like wifi problems or noisy parents,” says Vu.
Professors also made exams harder because of the fact that the exam is online, and students definitely noticed the change of difficulty.
“My professor told us we had an hour to write 125 questions, and I’m like how is that even possible? I’ve taken two of these exams and you don’t even have time to read the question,” says Vu.
So with a semester done and another up and coming, how can students better prepare for next term?
Vu says, “I think that actually having an agenda and writing down every single thing I have due will help. And for lecture videos, having a designated day to watch the online lectures as if you have a class will really help.”
