Cassius Smith, aka “CDMN” just turned 11 years old on Thursday and is about to have his third single released. Since the pandemic, Smith started producing his first single called “Oak to Lambeth”, which was released in September 2020. The music video has over 1,200 views currently on YouTube. His second single called “Accomplished”, released on New Years Day and already has over 1,000 views on YouTube as well.
So how did the journey start? Smith says one day he listened to “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, which inspired him to become a rapper.
“I just kind of started getting into other rap songs, while I was notified that there was a contest for like singing and dancing and whatever,” Smith says. “I decided to do rapping at that contest. Then from there on, I just kind of did a lot of those contests and won some awards.”
He started rapping nearly four years ago when he was 7, participating in local talent shows. In the four years that he’s practising his craft, he says he learned how to write music better and how to record better.
“Whether you’re recording through just audio with microphones, or just performing on stage, I learned to look up and not look down because the first time I was on stage, I kind of looked down the whole time and didn’t have much movement,” Smith says. “I’ve also learned to be a better writer. Most of the time, I’ve written just little verses of rapping. Then when I actually start to write a song, it makes it easier to write.”

His third single “1944” is set to release on Friday. He mentions that the song will involve the story of a 14-year old named George Stinney, who was wrongfully convicted of murdering two white girls and was executed on June 16, 1944. Smith saw that a lot of rappers were making songs about the Black Lives Matter movement, and wanted to do the same but more unique. He originally made a Black Lives Matter song but remembered the story of George Stinney and wrote about that.
“I just wanted to give people a different story that I thought was more touching to more kids younger out there that there’s a lot of discrimination against people whose skin colour is black, and that there are kids who are that age who struggle with that,” Smith stated. “I just thought that it was a pretty graphic story for a 14-year old to be executed.”
Smith has some long term goals ahead of him, including producing his first album or two in the future.
“I know I’ve always had a passion for doing it, and I enjoy it,” Smith said. “I don’t think I’ll ever really stop doing rapping and I’ll do it as long as I physically can.”
