Who else is excited for turkey dinner? This Monday, October 11th it’s the Canadian Thanksgiving. Where many families come together and celebrate. What are they celebrating you may ask? Well, the meaning behind the Canadian Thanksgiving has dated back to the 1500’s, when Martin Frobisher, an English seaman who completed three voyagers to North America, has lost his ship and seek help from the people of Nunavut.

Upon the help from the people of Nunavut, Martin hosted a huge celebration as a thank you and a token of respect for a safe passage from the people of Nunavut.
Many families celebrate the holiday in their own ways. Of course, you have your big delicious dinner, with either a big turkey or for those that don’t eat meat, something vegan deliciousness, mash potato’s, pees, corn, sweet potato’s, the good stuff. Then you celebrate with your family, counting your blessings.
‘To me, it’s about family, it’s about looking back and remembering to be thankful for everything you sometimes forget about.’ Robyn, a Fanshawe student has stated.
Robyn has also stated that since the day the Covid-19 pandemic has started she unfortanly had not been able to see her family all that much. This thanksgiving is that much more special to her, she will finally be able to see the family that she has not seen in almost two years. Thanksgiving is a holiday to bring people together, to celebrate the kindness and loyal that we have in Canada.
‘A lot of the times we do family games at the dinner table. That includes picking a person and saying what they are grateful for and then shuffling the cards, it’s really sweet.’
Many people have different traditions that they do for Thanksgiving. Becca and her family play family games together at dinner, my family and I all gather around the living room and just spend precious time together that we don’t usually have.
Thanksgiving is about family, thankfulness and to just appreciate the time we have together.
