The Western Mustangs are one win away from being crowned the Vanier Cup Champions. The Mustangs are taking on the Saskatchewan Huskies in the big game this Saturday. It should be one of the best games of the season as the Mustangs and Huskies both have high-powered offenses that can put a lot of points on the board.
The Mustang’s story has been that the run game has been their biggest strength this season. Running Back Keon Edwards, was number one in the league posting an insane season with 1,217 yards, 16 touchdowns, and an average of 6.9 yards-per-carry. The Mustangs have ridden him all season long to the Vanier Cup game and will depend on him to bring the cup home. Backup Running Back Trey Humes cannot be forgotten as he finished as the 4th highest rated rusher. Two of the top rushers in the league have combined for a virtually unstoppable offense this season.
A lot of the responsibility goes to the Offensive Line for blocking and creating space for the Running Backs to do their thing. Unfortunately, the Linemen never get the same amount of fame but deserve it all the same. The starting Offensive Line consists of Tiernan Doherty, Matthew Whistance-Smith, Keegan O’Neil, Ahmed Meddoui, and Erik Andersen. These five men live in the most challenging part of Football, the trenches. They hit every play and move defensive players out of the way so the stars can make their plays. Without a solid Offensive Line, no team would be successful, and with a great Offensive Line, you make your team successful. So this Saturday, when the star players make the plays pay attention to the big boys opening the opportunity for it to happen.
The Saskatchewan Huskies also have had a tremendous year and should not be taken lightly. The Huskies are led by an Offense that is the complete opposite of the Mustangs. The Huskies rely on a stellar air attack to quickly get down the field and score points. For the Mustangs to maintain control of this game, they need to slow down the passing game and force them to resort to running the ball.
The benefit of this matchup is that the Mustang’s running attack keeps the clock moving, which keeps the opposing team’s offense off the field. This allows them to run up the score and keep the other team from even having a chance to score. This kind of play is why the Mustangs have fared so well this season, and this Vanier Cup game should be no different.
The game gets started at 1:00 pm this Saturday. It takes place at the Telus-Université Laval Stadium in Quebec City. This game will also be the latest Vanier Cup date in history. The forecasts call for a mixture of sun and clouds and a temperature of -10C.
