Canadian country music star, Ty Baynton, lives a pretty interesting lifestyle. By day, he rides in rodeos. But as soon as he gets bucked off, up on stage he goes, living the true cowboy lifestyle.
“I got really lucky a few years back,” says Baynton. “The RAM Rodeo Tour for Ontario hired me on to basically perform at every single rodeo. So I figured if I’m there anyway, I might as well do something stupid. So I got to ride and compete that entire rodeo season and perform at night. I always joked that if I had a good ride, I got two paycheques. One from the rodeo and one from performing.”
Baynton says when his band and crew found out he was in the rodeos, they would start making bets on if they would play a gig that night or not.
“Most of the time the rodeo was pretty good to me and they were able to put me as early in the show as possible that I buck out in the first half and still have plenty of time to get back and set up soundcheck. But sometimes there was just no way around it and there were a couple of rodeos where I literally didn’t get a chance to soundcheck.”
This has made some pretty interesting stories for Baynton.
“There was one rodeo I made my ride, I got off my broad, tipped my hat to the crowd, and I’m climbing over the fence at the end of the arena. The announcer is trying to come over and interview me and chat at the end. And I’m like ‘I’m sorry man, I have to be on stage now’. Because the rodeo was finishing so I literally walked out the end of the arena, I’m taking my vest and my chaps off as I’m walking on stage.”
He says when he was on stage, he had dirt all down the side of him and spurs still on his boots. But, that ties into just how genuine Baynton is. Genuineness is something that is super important to him, especially when it comes to his music.
“For me personally as an artist, if I’m on stage singing about something I don’t believe in it I haven’t lived, it’s not going to come across as genuine. And to me, that’s very evident to a listener.”
The overall stories of his songs aren’t necessarily something he’s lived every single line from, but all of his songs have multiple stories from his life put into them.
Baynton’s latest album, Wrong Turns, was released late 2021.
“The title track is ‘Wrong Turns’ and believe it or not, I wrote that song in 2013. But when we were doing the last album, the goal behind that album was to have mid-tempo radio songs that would work well on radio and would also fill the live show with original music that was fun and upbeat. That song just didn’t quite fit that bill. So knowing that even before the last album was done, I knew that this track was getting recorded on this album. From a songwriting standpoint to me personally, it’s the best song I’ve ever written.”
Now, the hope is to release music videos, more music, and of course, live shows. You can watch Baynton’s latest music video here:
