This month marks two years since the first Covid-19 restrictions in colleges and universities around the province. Since then, they have shifted to either online learning or a mixed learning experience. Some students have enjoyed the shift, while some have hated the experience. Finally, after two years, it appears we could be moving towards a time when classes are moved back into the classroom. But, the effect it will have on students who are now used to online learning will be a potential problem.
Blake Fischer is a university student who has been in his program before and now during the Pandemic. He has experienced the changes and the complete transition from in-school to online. Fischer begins by sharing how his experience online has been with his program.
“I would say that I have been pretty lucky than most as I learn very well in an online format. In addition, my schooling has transitioned to a ‘do it at your own pace’ kind of model, making it a lot more flexible. My profs have also been more lenient with deadlines which is good.”
Although there have been positives to the shift to online learning, Fischer admits some negative impacts he has noticed.
“One way I think it has impacted my learning is for some seminar-style courses it is tough to have a debate-style conversation over zoom. It just ends up with people talking over each other due to the delay. My school has already transitioned back into in-person learning, which is good, but one thing I will say is the restrictions have made it pretty difficult to sit through my one three-hour class.”
Fischer adds that overall, the shift to online learning has been a success.
“I think overall people have adapted pretty well considering the circumstances as everyone seems to be a lot more used to it and comfortable with online learning.”
Fischer concluded that the shift back to in-school learning could be problematic. It will not only be a shift from the routine they are now used to. In addition, it will directly affect them physically as most students have not been as active as they were before the Pandemic. Although, the shift back to in-school learning will be better overall for all students.
As of right now, there are currently no plans to shift back to in-school learning this year. With the end of the semester so close by, it would not make sense to shift restrictions for only a month. However, the change back to in-school will be a topic of conversation in the summer as we move towards the new normal next year.
