While most restrictions have been lifted, some school boards still choose to restrict parents from coming to their kids’ sports games. The choice has been angering some parents who have waited to cheer their kids on from the sidelines. Unfortunately, by recent reports, it seems they will have to wait longer.
The Thames Valley District School Board has said they will consult with the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and senior administration before making any changes. As a result, the only cheering will come from the sidelines for the time being.
To hear a parent’s perspective on the matter, I talked to a mother of 2, Lee Ann Goffar. Goffar begins expressing her opinion on the overall Covid-19 restrictions.
“I have, for the most part, supported the measures used. I believe certain measures may not have been needed or effective. But, for the most part, they were needed to stop the spread.”
Goffar continues with her belief on if the restrictions still are needed.
“Currently, I do believe that we are at the point where it needs to end. Sports during this all have been a struggle. I have two girls that play high-level basketball, and having it stopped has impacted them physically and mentally. On the other hand, my girls are older, so not being able to watch games hasn’t been too impactful on them.”
Goffar concludes with a perspective on who the restrictions have affected the most.
“I have sadly missed out on those special situations, but it hasn’t been too bad. They have always been coached to focus on the game and not on us being there, so it was probably harder on us than them.”
So, it seems that the parents are more affected than the kids in this situation. But, it still brings the question of whether these restrictions are still required. With every other business lifting their restrictions, it may just be a matter of time before high schools follow suit and let parents return to the stands.
