London Children’s Hospital launches partnership with Vanier Children’s Mental Wellness in order to double places for children with severe eating disorders.
Eating problems among children from six to 13 is an issue that becomes more and more serious especially for the last 10 years. But the number of patients in London region started growing since the beginning of pandemic.
There are various reasons for that as children can easily get under the influence and do not make decisions for themselves. Some of the reasons can be connected to the negative effects of browsing through the internet or getting information from older people outside of family, especially when it comes to young teenagers. But the main reason for children’s eating disorder is the system of nutrition inside of the family.
The program that has been generated by both Children’s and Vanier’s Hospitals is designed to provide help not only to children, but to work with the whole family as well. It will help to establish contact with the child and recover from disorder. Family therapy is one of the most successful approaches when it comes to dealing with eating disorders among children, as it provides mental support not only from healthcare professionals, but from family members. It facilitates the process of healing and makes it more comfortable for kids.
Sometimes there is more than one member in the family suffering from eating disorder, which makes it easier for younger children to suffer from it as well. The community-based program makes it possible to provide structure for family to use after the treatment.
The step care project also provides the possibility for children to live in the community. It includes living, practicing daily activities and even attending school.
As number of new patients continue to rise, cooperation project aims to provide treatment to all the children suffering. Part of new patients are transferred to the cottage in Vanier Children’s Mental Wellness, when another part is being taking care of on the basis of Children’s Hospital in London.

But there are still more than 200 children waiting for treatment. New project will try to lower this number and help children to recover in the least stressful way possible.
Children are being watched and monitored after the recovery to make sure that they are following the rehabilitation process. It is primarily important to take care about young teenagers who do not assume the whole responsibility for their actions and the importance of recovery.
Program has been approved by provincial government and has received under $1-million grant.
As eating disorder is a big issue that impacts people of all age, it is better to start treatment during young years. It makes the process of recovery less tense and nerve-wracking for the patient.
