Last season was uncharacteristic for Fanshawe’s women’s basketball team. Led by five-time Coach of the Year, Bill Carriere, the Falcon’s are usually at the top or near the top of the standings. Prior to the pandemic, Fanshawe’s women’s basketball team had one back to back OCAA Gold Medals in 2019 and 2020, giving them 13 total. The 2020/21 season was unfortunately shut down. The 2021/22 season was one to forget for the Falcon’s. Fanshawe would win their first game of the season, before losing seven in a row to end the season at 1-7.
That sets the stage for this year. Fanshawe’s women’s basketball team is back and hungry to get back on top. The Falcon’s are currently 5-1 to begin the season. Their only loss was against the undefeated Humber Hawks. Head Coach Bill Carriere told us that this hot start “proves to our own players that we can compete at a high level and have an opportunity to win a championship.” Carriere also mentioned that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”
A big reason why the Falcons have been able to get off to a hot start has been the stellar play of forward Alison Cotton and guard Sydney Kendellen. Cotton and Kendellen are the only seniors on the team, and are leading the Falcon’s in scoring at 12 points per game each. “We’ve had an opportunity to coach them for so long, they know what to expect from us, and they know right from wrong on the court.” Coach Carriere said about Cotton and Kendellen. Carriere also expressed that he wasn’t sure if Kendellen was going to come back after suffering an ACL injury, but he’s proud of her persistence to get back with the team. “She doesn’t look like she’s missed a step. We’re very fortunate to have her.” Carriere added.
Fanshawe’s next game is on the road this Friday when they take on St. Clair College.
