We are over two weeks into the New Year, and if you’re struggling to keep your resolutions, you aren’t alone. We’ve all heard of January gym goers trying to kick off their New Year’s resolutions that don’t make it to February.
OEV Fitness owner Jakob Fowler s
ays the problem might be the goals people set. Fowler says many people come to his gym looking to lose a certain number of pounds, instead he directs them to set goals based on performance, which is more reliable to determine health.
“I guess a lot of people set weight loss goals, which typically aren’t the best goal, because scale weight by itself is usually not a good metric to go by. Without a pretty detailed scale you don’t know how much is fat or how much is muscle.”
Second, he says accountability is key. Find someone who will motivate you, like a personal trainer, or even a friend and keep them in the loop with your progress.
“Get a coach, whether that be us or even just an accountability buddy. It seems like having that extra layer of somebody just checking in on you, somebody that you are accountable to. It seems like for the majority of people that is the missing piece.”
Finally, Fowler warns not to be discouraged with slip ups. Good habits take time to form and will come if you stick with them.
“You will stumble you will fall on the way, just give yourself grace. Know that that’s part of the process, just keep going, one foot in front of the other. If you mess up, next day just back on the wagon and you can do it.”
