“It almost made me tear up. It was awesome”
For the first time in Brier Championships history, Team Nunavut has won a match.
Jake Higgs–Skip for Team Nunavut– described the moment as surreal and amazing.
Coming into today’s match, Team Nunavut had a record of 0-44, well, that all changed this afternoon when Nunavut defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 7-4.
Nunavut has always been a small Curling community.
Most of the teams that compete in the provincial trials, curl out of Iqaluit.
Nunavut’s curling community was growing rapidly, but that was diminished by the COVID-19 pandemic when teams could not travel due to restrictions and quarantine protocols.
Higgs mentioned what was going through his head after the match.
“I’m just trying not to fall down. Everyone’s going crazy…it was incredible”.
Higgs commented that he had a chance to win prior to the start of the match and was confident in his team to win.
Team Nunavut’s next match will be Sunday morning at 9:00am against Team Manitoba.
