Two girls are collecting socks for people who are in need of warm clothing in advance of the winter. The campaign, named ‘’Socktober’’ by the sisters Audrey and Jillian, is in its 4th edition this year.
The idea came up after they volunteered at the Food Bank in London, a couple years ago.
‘’Mom told us that I couldn’t buy everyone’s shoes because that was really expensive, so we branched off a little bit and we decided that we were going to do socks instead,’’ said Audrey.
‘’Then, we started doing flyers and getting the word out.”
‘’The very first year was our best year. We got 1800 pairs of socks at the time.”
Their mother, Shannon Sinclair, believes the girls are still going to get around 500 pairs until the end of October, when the campaign is done.
‘’I think it’s important because they see things. Kids are part of the community like everybody else, and it’s important when you see not so great things happening in your neighborhood or in the community, to remember that there’s always something that you can do.”
‘’They went door to door to put flyers in everybody’s mailbox.”
She expressed her appreciation for the girls’ initiative, encouraging people to make donations of any surplus socks they might have.
The collection now has more than 4.000 pairs, with 700 of them being bought by the girls.
Donations run until Oct. 31 and can be dropped off at Christ the King University Parish and/or Nicholas Wilson Public School.
