Fortnite, one of the most popular video games on earth at the moment is about to get even more popular as they announced the game is re-releasing their original map.
The game which has garnered praise for how expansive and complete of a game it is while being free has has seen a slow down in new users this year compared to years prior.
according to Dexterto, Fortnite gained 50 million users in 2023 which is a healthy amount for video game standards, but nothing like the 120 million user increase they saw from 2018 to 2019. The game which usually sees just over 1.5 million active users a day is currently seeing over 3.5 million players 1 hour into the new map’s release.
When Fortnite’s owner Epic Games made the announcement of the map last Friday, the buzz was almost immediate with many gamers of all ages saying they’re going to re-download the game.
Here in London it’s a wide range of gamers here who are excited about the return of the “OG” map.
22-year-old Ben says the return’s “gonna make me feel like I’m 17 again.” And 23-year-old Nasseeb says it’s what he’s “been waiting for them to do for 4 years now… can finally get off of work and look forward to hopping on when i get home.”
It’s also getting some of the younger gamers excited too. 15-year-old Nickeleyes Monk from Beal says the return of the map is “pretty lit.” and he’s “hyped to play it.”
While most gamers here in the city are ecstatic, a few aren’t as trusting. 22-year-old grad student Marc Piquette, who used to play the game “religiously” in his high school days says that the return “Just feels like a way to get more players on for a bit.” And while he still plans on trying it out he doesn’t think it will reignite his love for the game.
The feel for most however is that the “new” map, which will bring back fan favourites like Tilted Towers, Pleasant Park, Retail Row and more will definitely create hype with both casual and competitive gamers here in London and globally.
