Buckingham palace announced today that King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and has begun treatment.
The palace said the cancer is not related to the King’s recent prostate treatment. They also didn’t specify which form of cancer the 75-year-old monarch has.
While being the ruling monarch in the U.K, King Charles is also Canada’s official head of state.
Charles became Canada’s head of state in September of 2022 after his mother Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.
In the palace’s statement, Charles is “wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.” in addition to the diagnosis, Charles will turn 76 in November. This may have Canadians wondering what this means for our government, money and line.
Who are Charles III’s successors?
1. Prince William, Charles’ first born son is next in line for the throne after Charles. the current Prince of Wales would be declared king, should Charles be unfit to continue as monarch.
2. Prince George, The firstborn of William is second in line after his father as well as the throne at just 10 years old.
3. Princess Charlotte, The second of William’s children would be third in line for the throne after her older brother and father.
What does Canada’s head of state do?
As the head of state, King Charles acts as the personal embodiment of the Crown in Canada, or our government. The Crown then entrusts our government to work for the best on the behalf of Canada and its citizens.
In present day, however, King Charles III acting as our head of state is more of a formality. Once our government passes bills the crown signs off on them and official come into law. The crown does not influence any decisions made by Ottawa.
Should Charles III be unable to continue as King and Canada’s head of state, these duties would fall on Prince William.
What does this mean for our money?
Canadian coins with King Charles’ face on the “heads” side have been in circulation for 2 months now. In addition to our coins, 2o dollar bills with Charles’ face have begun circulating in Canada.
Similarly to his title as crown, if he is unable to continue as Canada’s head of state, Prince William would have his face on our currency, although it would be unclear how long into his tenure for the change to be made.
King Charles personally called both William and Harry to share news of his health.
Political leaders sent messages of support. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted:
“I, like Canadians across the country and people around the world, am thinking of His Majesty King Charles III as he undergoes treatment for cancer,”
